I.B.M. Ring 49
The Doug Henning Magic Wand
Club
Millennium Project History
by Alexander W. Hobson
It started back in
1927 with a few buddies getting together on a regular basis at a few member's
homes and has become a powerful meeting place for some of Canada's, and the
world’s top magicians. This list starts with the likes of Dr. John Booth, Doug
Henning, Greg Frewin and continues as we go beyond the twenty first century.
This document was originally compiled and written to be handed to the President
of the Magic Wand club on their inauguration day. It is incumbent upon the new
President to update and maintain this reference before it is handed to the next
leader, for there is surly history made each new year, with such great people.
It is the history and mystery that is Ring 49. There is a famous saying,
"You can't know where you're going, if you don't know where you've
been". This document hopes to make it clear the who, what, where and when
of Ring 49. We all know the Why. Treat it with respect as it is a reflection of
us all. It is hoped that each year, a yearbook will be compiled and inserted
with these documents and held by a member until such time as it needs to be
passed on in ceremony.

Ring
49 The Magic Wand Club Hamilton Ontario Canada actually started out as Ring 17
but due to falling attendance the Ring number was given up and picked up by the
Toronto club, currently in use as Ring 17 Sid Lorraine The Hat and Rabbit Club
Toronto. The Club was then granted a Charter on April 10, 1947 by then I.B.M.
National President John Braun as recognized Charter Members of Hamilton, Ont.,
Ring 49. Previous to that, I.B.M. Ring 49 was actually originally given to The
Egyptian Mummers Ring 49, Decatur Illinois USA, Sunday May 17, 1930. This
charter was lost for reasons not yet researched. A copy of Hamilton Ring 49's
charter is posted with this.
The
following information was obtained from Ring 49 member John Collins, who to our
great fortune, has kept much of the information regarding Ring 49, including
this written history by Phil Grinstead as follows...
Magic
Wand Club and
I.B.M.
Ring 49, Ontario (by Phil Grinstead)
It
is our feeling that apart from stirring the memories of some of the older
members, that the younger, more recent members will catch a glimpse of our
earlier activities, and in doing so will feel that they are also playing, at
this moment, an important part, for it is only too true that in the future
these young men will be the leaders. The ones that somebody else will be
writing up.
In
the "Linking Ring" magazine, January 1927, President W.W. Durbin
noted that Rings were being formed throughout the USA, and expressed a wish
that all members would take an active part in promoting this medium of I.B.M.
expansion.
Stan Hall, who already had become a member in January 1927, was quick to
realize the benefit to be derived by associating in this broader way and at
once made plans to round up the magicians in the city of Hamilton. By December
9th, 1927, Stan had the required number, enabling him to make
application to Kenton, Ohio to form a Ring. This was approved on January 16th,
1928 and was, according to correspondence, the first organized Ring in Canada.
Our number was Ring 17 and the charter members were Stan Hall, John Booth, Tom
Tyrer, Jack Walker, Nubar Mekonian and Alec Pottinger. Phil Grinstead joined
I.B.M. and the Ring November 1st, 1928, followed by Jim Parker and
Norman Hilton in April 1929. March 30th, 1930 brought Otto
Brownridge and Les Ellsworth into the group. Other members around this period
were William Blake, Dr. Stewart and Tom Harrop.
Some very interesting meetings were held in those formative years. Here I am
going to digress briefly to tell you something of the life and times... It was
the golden era of Vaudeville, and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada boasted four
variety theatres. The Lyric on Mary Street, (now the century) a first run
Keith-Albee variety theatre - seats - booked only - 2 shows a day - top acts.
The Temple theatre on Catherine Street South (now the site of a high rise
apartment) was a 2nd run house - Vaudeville- later stock musicals -
stock plays. The Pantages Theatre, now the Palace Theatre, highly successful
continuous show open noon to ?? And had a worthy rival in Marcus Loews (now the
Capitol) carried 6 acts plus silent pictures, later talkies and to have a route
on either Pantages or Loews circuit meant you had a polished act. Much later
the Tivoli theatre, using acts. Other legitimate houses, using road shows were
the Savoy, now a parking lot, and the Grand now demolished. These were the regular
spots that received almost an annual visit from Thurston, Blackstone, Dante,
Ovette, Dr. Neff, and other notables.
Many of these performers came to our Ring 17 meetings. Stan Hall was the
leading power in drawing these artists into contact with the club. We
entertained (we hope) and were entertained by Oswald Rae, Blackstone, Dr.
Carrington, Walter Gibson, Cardini, Nicola, Paul LePaul, Frank VanHoven, Bert
Johnson, two world-famous ventriloquists - Arthur Prince and Walter Walters. In
addition, a few special meetings, not Ring 17, were held at the home of John
Booth and here we met Ramon, Edger Bergen, Burling Hall, Al De-Large, John
Hunniford. Also a small one day tri-city party was held to honour visitor,
Leslie Guest, U.S.A.. Here we strike an unfortunate note. The Hamilton club
through no fault of its leader or membership, was forced to disband when severe
business depression caused a general tightening of the purse strings. We simply
could not meet I.B.M. dues or spend money on entertainment. Theatres were not
overcrowded even at 25 cent matinee admission. Rough going for many.
On November 18, 1931 an attempt was made to revive Magic and the Magic club.
Tom Harrop, inventor of magical props organized The Magic Club, meeting at a
hall on Barton Street East in Hamilton. Charter members were Tom Harrop, Tom
Tyrer, Phil Grinstead, Wm Blake, Otto Brownridge, and Les Ellsworth. This small
operation lasted only two or three years and had but one ladies night.
Now
we are coming up to the 1936-1939 period in which many great events took place.
This new Magical group took the name of the "Hamilton Magician's
Club" and met in the Winter Gardens in Hamilton. This club had a somewhat
up and down life, at times quite stormy, but on the credit side, put on some
quite good public shows-two or three. Magic friends we remember from this
period were: Jack Bastow, Harry Harmer, Wm(Scotty) Lang, John Shipton, Jeff
Turner, Jack Bastow, Gym Ledwith, Hugh Somers, Herb Stonham, John Tomlinson,
Tony Sanski, Frank Weatherall, Frank Monoham, Stan Hall, and of course all of
the previously mentioned Magi.
On
September 2, 1939, when several magicians from Hamilton were in attendance at
the Piff Paff Poof convention at Fort Erie, Ontario, the radio in the hotel
lobby aired the news of the start of the second world war. Club members all did
their share in the war effort some by actual service, some through
entertainment of the services. Frank Hayes (akbar) with the "Carry on
Revue", Hugh Somers & Dorothy with another Troupe show, Phil Grinstead
"Thumbs Up Revue" and later with "Whiz Bangs". Martin
Grinstead with the Halifax Navy show. Bill (Scotty) Lang did a great job on
food parcels to Great Britain and the Houdini night shows for shut-ins in the
various institutions in Hamilton. All the members of course contributed aid to
these unfortunates. Through these visits (1944-1947) the club received
out-standing publicity through frequent use of group photos and write-ups in
the Hamilton Newspaper.
This was also the summer picnic era, great gatherings at the Brauns, in
Kitchener, Fred Clarke of Fergus, Don Potts of Brantford, and at Stan Hall's
and John Shiptons' in Hamilton, and not just once, several times.
Early in 1947 it was felt that the time was ripe for the re-forming of the
I.B.M. Ring. A group of members once again led by Stanley Hall applied for a
charter. In March 1947 the Charter was granted and presented by James Lake,
Ontario representative of the I.B.M. . Charter members were Loyal Burke, Edgar
Clarke, Herb Cullen, Stan Hall, Wm Lang, Gordon Precious, Len Rumball, Frank
Hayes, Irving Newson, John Shipton. The club was now known as I.B.M. Ring 49,
Hamilton, Canada. The ring meetings were held at Stan Hall's Main Street home
for some time. Eventually, the ring increasing in size, it was felt that it was
asking too much of the hostess to accept month after month such a large group.
A circuit list of available to receive monthly meetings at their home was drawn
up and used until the Ring outgrew itself again. This was the period of meeting
Cam Hooton, Billy McGhie, Capt. Bill James, Doug Hewitt, Lyle Elliott and Frank
Smith.
Following
experimental meetings in various locations including a somewhat dismal hall on
Main Street near Ferguson, the club moved into Roberts Restaurant commencing
with regular 8 o'clock meetings, trying 6:30 dinner meetings, each having its
own advantage.
It
is at this point in magical history that we must record some of our most
successful years. There was good harmony in the membership, leaders, group
committee and individual members all contributing their share. Mention should
be made of some special magical events. Amongst others, we remember the night
at Otto Brownridges' home when Amadio Vacca, European Magician showed Ring 49
members portions of his "smoke" act. Geoffery Buckinghams' lecture
and demonstrations, Martin Elz and his wife. Dr. Ed Dawes from Glasgow,
Scotland (now Professor E Dawes) Arnold Drennen IBM president, Robert Harbin,
noted English Illusionist.
The
influx of out-of-town members has given the club a tremendous boost.
In
closing, we record our thanks, specially to those who in any way materially
assisted in directing the welfare of your I.B.M. Ring and to the members in
general.
------000000------
In
the summer of 2000, a vote was taken by
members of the Magic Wand club, I.B.M. Ring 49. The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of changing the club name
to, The Doug Henning Magic Wand Club.
This initiative was suggested by Nick J. Sacco and spearheaded by
Alexander W. Hobson. Permission was
sought through legal channels and finally Debby Henning spoke with Alexander W.
Hobson and was thrilled to give permission for Doug’s name to be used, as Doug
hand been a member while attending McMaster University in Hamilton. Here is a copy of the press release, which
was issued…
Press
Release-Sept./11/2000
International
Brotherhood Of Magicians
Ring
49, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
It
is with great pleasure and pride that I announce the addition of the name Doug
Henning to our magic club. The Hamilton Ring (club) 49 of the IBM, will now be
known as The Doug Henning Magic Wand Club. This honour is being bestowed for
Mr. Henning's outstanding contribution to the Art of Magic and to his support
of Ring 49 and the IBM. The honour was suggested by IBM Ring 49 member Nick
Sacco and spearheaded in a club vote.
In
a phone conversation September 8th, 2000 with Debby Henning, Doug's
widow, Debby said, "I would be honoured if you called your club The Doug
Henning Magic Wand club. It's really beautiful and I'm very very proud of this
and thanks for honouring Duggy and giving him this great honour. Lots and lots
of Love and prosperity for you and all of the magicians who belong to The Doug
Henning Magic Wand Club. It's very very beautiful and thank you so much."
Debby
also said, "Duggy was starting to get interested in magic again and he was
going to many magic shops purchasing props so that he could use them when he
got better." Unfortunately, Mr.
Henning continued to have ill health and passed away February 7, 2000 after
suffering from liver cancer for five months, he was 52 years old.
Doug
Henning was a member of IBM Ring 49 while attending McMaster University in
Hamilton where he graduated with an Honours B.Sc. in Physiological Psychology
before going on to obtain a doctoral degree in the Science of Creative
Intelligence from Maharishi European Research University, Switzerland.
Henning
is best known for his Magic specials on TV and in Canada, his exceptional show
at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, the first Rock Magical Musical Spellbound,
broke every box office record at the Royal Alexandra. This allowed Doug to
bring his show to Broadway with a new version called The Magic Show,
which ran for four and a half years and became one of the longest running
musicals in Broadway's history.
Most
recently Mr Henning had incorporated his new generation of magic into Veda
Land, a theme park he designed in collaboration with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and
with more than 20 of the leading theme park, construction, engineering, and
architectural firms. Veda Land was slated to open in Niagara Falls, Ontario,
Canada. His last wish was that work continue to finance and construct this
theme park and destination resort. For more information about Veda Land go to http://www.vedaland.com and for a complete

far beyond what is necessary to help the club work.
